So much of my life, Dad was not only working all week at the bank, but then serving in church callings and teaching at BYU, all of which required him to wear a suit. It may have been the addition of new hiking boots with bright red laces that made the jeans and plaid shirts he wore when he was home on Saturdays stand out. Perhaps he hoped to make a quick trip up one of his favorite mountain peaks or repel off one of the poplars in the back yard or even the roof.

I remember how sharp Dad looked when he left for work each morning. He took such care in his appearance. I remember watching him shave on a number of occasions, thinking that it was truly amazing that he didn't cut himself. Since I had never seen any other man shave, I was sure that he was far superior to other men in his shaving skills. He always finished with a splash of Gillette aftershave that was his signature scent. Because he was always clean shaven, the times he grew a mustache and whiskers during vacation were very memorable and novel, but I loved his smooth cheeks most.
